Hi guys!
So I’m sure you all want to hear about my finger. It actually looked way worse than in those pictures.. those were taken when it was clean! So what happened was yesterday I was going to make my dessert ahead of time using my stick blender. I have a bad habit of trying to get every last drop and as I was cleaning out the blade with my finger I accidentally turned the blender on. Soo.. the blender twirled round and round my finger!! Yeah- there was blood gushing everywhere! I’m really stubborn so I did my nursing duty and put pressure on it, held it above the heart, and bandaged it up to stop the bleeding. It stopped for the most part but later when my dad saw it he made me go to the ER.. and turns out I needed stitches! They said I was lucky it didn’t break the bone. I had 4 slices on my finger- one of them down to the muscle and the other to the fat. I didn’t get home until after midnight! They had to numb/block the nerves in my finger and then irrigate it. Problem was- one of the slashes was already starting to heal- thanks to all that protein I eat probably! That would have been a good thing except they thought there could have been bacteria trapped. So they had to re-open it.. yikes! And the stitches took forever because it wouldn’t stop bleeding. What a night! Moral of the story- those 5 extra licks aren’t worth it. LOL! It’s looking much better today though:
Needless to say I was tired this morning and I decided to do my workout later in the day instead of bright and early. For breakfast I had my new favorite.. french toast cottage cheese overnight oats! Last night I mixed together:
- 1.25 cup Nancy’s low-fat cottage cheese (it might have been a little less)
- 1/4 cup raw oats
- 10 drops Capella French Toast Flavor Drops
- Liquid vanilla stevia, cinnamon, and ginger
I let that soak in the refrigerator overnight and this morning topped it with 1 tbsp almond butter:
375 calories, 43 grams of protein, 29 grams of cabs, 13 grams of fat
Ahh it’s so good! Overnight oats (made the usual way with just yogurt and oats) NEVER fill me up. But cottage cheese does! And it’s so doughy and delicious. Mmm..
It actually held me a good four hours! I usually eat every 2-3 so that was pushing it. LOL. I went to my microbiology lab because labs are too hard to miss.
On the drive back to my side of town I snacked on a chocolate Protein Cake with 1 cup 0% Fage, 1/2 banana, Capella banana split flavor drops, cinnamon, ginger, and stevia:
255 calories, 38 grams of protein, 26 grams of carbs, 0 fat
And then I headed to the gym! I have to tell you I wouldn’t really recommend lifting weights with an injured finger. But I’m stubborn and I have goals here people! I ended up doing the Push muscles as scheduled and I just didn’t use my finger. LOL. The weights below correspond to the reps 10, 8, 6, and 4 or 10, 8, and 6. Make sense?
- Smith Bench Press- 60, 70, 75, 80 pounds. Repeat.
- Smith Seated Incline Shoulder Press- 50, 55, 60 pounds. Repeat.
- Neutral Grip Shoulder Press- 30 pounds, 3 sets of 10 <- try this move.. it’s harder than it looks!
- Incline Dumbbell Flies- 30 pounds, 40 pounds, 45 pounds, Repeat
- Decline Skull Crushers- 30 pounds, 40 pounds, 50 pounds. Repeat
- Bent Over Lateral Raises. 30 pounds, 3 sets of 10; 40 pounds, 3 sets of 8 (I alternated one set with 30 pounds and one set with 40)
- One Arm Cable Push Down- 20 pounds, 30 pounds, 33 pounds, 40 pounds. Repeat
- Decline Push Ups- 3 sets of 20
- 15 minutes of high intensity cardio on the Stairmaster
And then I came home and was super hungry for lunch! I made some quick lettuce wraps with Butterhead lettuce, 3.5 oz sweet potato, 7.5 oz chicken breast, hot sauce, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper:
305 calories, 46 grams of protein, 20 carbs, 2 grams of fat
And a double portion of Protein Brownie Batter with 2 tsp Justin’s Maple Almond Butter for lunch dessert:
275 calories, 43 grams of protein, 12 carbs, 6 grams of fat
It never gets old!
I was pretty lazy the rest of the afternoon and unmotivated when it came to dinner. I made an easy stir-fry with 4 oz all natural turkey breast, 6 oz stir-fry veggies, about a cup of coleslaw mix, cayenne pepper, and pure red chili:
215 calories, 26 grams of protein, 8 carbs, 2 fat
And now I’m debating on dessert! I kind of want cottage cheese but I should probably cut down. Umm.. not!! haha. I also have some Low Carb Sweet Bread that I made yesterday.. and there’s always brownie batter or protein cakes.. decisions, decisions! What are YOU guys having for dessert??
Well I guess that’s it! I should probably rest my finger.. oh by the way.. I get to see Bryon Friday!! I’m flying down.. I can’t wait!
See ya!

Glad your okay now! Love your protein batter!!

So sorry to hear about the finger! I would have freaked out, but I’m glad you’re taking it in stride.

Your poor finger!!
Glad you’re ok now! Andrew had a similar, more minor accident last week while sliding his finger around the rim of a chobani yogurt to get the last few licks. Part of the lid was still on and it was jagged and it sliced his index finger.
Take it easy April!! Where does Byron live? Glad you get to go see him soon!!

Ohmygosh, you know, I washed my hand blender tonight and didn’t realize till after that I forgot to unplug it. Ahhh, that’s so scary that you actually chopped your finger in it! You’re a trooper. I would be crying and whining about the pain. Although, I’d probably still lift too – fitness goals here!
I saw a girl on the recumbent bike once in a leg cast. Now that’s dedication.

that is SO scary good thing nothing worse happened =|

ps. Just made a mix of oats/ cotttage cheese and yogurt for tomorrows breakfast, it’ll be my first I’m pretty darn excited!!!!

That’s good that your finger is all stitched and already trying to heal! Getting it stuck in the blender sounds so incredibly painful.
All your working out is really motivating. I’m not a huge strength person, preferring my cardio, but you make me want to give it a go more often.

duuuude gym with a broken finger! you’re a champion.
i say low carb sweeet bread! i just had a piece with dinner and it’s so gooooooood
[Reply]
Holy crap! That is one bad injury but it could have been worse, as you said! I am like you, I would have worked out but don’t recommend it to others!
I worked out with a rotator cuff injury & just did what I could & then after that horrible dog attack, I was doing abs at home within a couple days & back in the gym 7-10 days later with doc OK!
So glad you are healing & that yummy food will help! Take care!
[Reply]
Yikes! I hope your fingers heal soon!

OMG OMG OMG! I just gasped so loud!

Ouch, ouch ouch glad you got some stitches. My friend at work, sliced her finger on the paper towel holder last week.

oh my goodness! That looks painful…hope it is feeling alright now! You better be more careful, Nurse April!
P.S I had chocolate cottage cheese tonight! (cot. cheese, cocoa, stevia) Tasted like a brownie. Mmmmmm.
[Reply]
OUCHY OUCHY!!! I don’t even know how you’re still typing right now!!! I’m just glad your finger didn’t get sliced off. But I have to admit that I’m totally guilty of brushing my finger on the blade of my food processor to get off the last licks… and yes, I’ve cut myself multiple time. Luckily, nothing too bad.
Hope it heals up quickly!

OMG! I hope they gave you some pain meds. It looks awful! I will keep your story in mind when I decide to get those last few drops out
Sorry!
I have to tell you, a friend called me “bony”. I looked at him and was like, I guess I need to hit the weights harder! That is one thing I must say I’ve never been called! LOL I thought it was funny…I’m far from bony

OMG APRIL!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am soooo sorry that happened to you. I think any cook worth her salt has had a nasty accident, mine was recently trying to be a hero w/ my brand new mandolin and almost shaved off my left thumb. Been there. Reminder to take it easy and that god was lookin out for you honey.
The already healing/all that protein i eat comment..made me laugh but so sorry this happened!
[Reply]
omg, this story is scary
thank god you’re ok now!
[Reply]
That’s a very nasty injury…the perils of blending, eh? Actually, I’m guilty of licking the blade of my hand blender sometimes (okay, all the time) when I make protein shakes so I’ll be making doubly sure that it isn’t turned on…I really wouldn’t want to replicate what happened to your finger with my tongue!
I’m happy it’s feeling better now ~ I know the feeling of not wanting anything to get in the way of your goals as I have tendonitis messing up all of my running plans right now. Injuries suck.
Take care

That’s what I did! LOL

Holy Crap! I just absent-mindedly clicked over from miss Janetha and you’re chopping fingers off over here!
I hope the pain isn’t too bad… I almost sliced my thumb off senior year of college, not too pretty, but a-ok now. All I remember is the aching pain. But I’m guessing with the workout and the cooking you’re doing just fine.
[Reply]
oh my god april!!! feel better soon! i am so sorry to hear what happened! rest that finger love. hope you don’t feel too much pain there!

AHH! I’ll be honest, I winced in pain a little when I saw that! I hope your are doing well. I will always unplug that thing when I am done now! Lesson-learned.
